One could argue that religion certainly had its part in being the spark to society as a whole, but ironically enough, it might also be the very spark to the fire that burns the whole thing to the ground.

Religion is not a well defined word, it kind of encompasses various ubiquitous human behaviours when it's convenient and not when it isn't.
